Heraklion power grid suffers widespread failures following heavy rain

Heavy rainfall and lightning strikes have caused widespread power outages and electrical grid failures across several regions in Heraklion, Crete. The issues were reported starting from the early hours of Wednesday, affecting both urban areas and rural locations.

In Knossos, residents experienced prolonged blackouts during the night. The damage has extended across a large geographic zone, stretching from Malevizi to Chersonissos. Reports from citizens included sightings of sparks and explosions from electrical poles, prompting calls to the Heraklion Fire Service. In the village of Pyrgi, fire crews were deployed to inspect the situation and ensure resident safety.

Observers suggest that the combination of intense weather, lightning, and the accumulation of dust and moisture on electrical equipment contributed to the malfunctions. The recurring nature of these failures during the first significant autumn rain has raised concerns regarding the stability and readiness of the local power grid for future winter weather events.
