Heraklion school bus narrowly avoids overturning after road subsidence

A school bus carrying five to six students from the 1st Primary School of Agia Marina narrowly avoided overturning in Heraklion, Crete, after a section of the road subsided. The incident occurred around 07:45 on Agia Paraskevi Road, near the Koliva area in the Malevizi Municipality, following heavy rainfall.

To prevent the vehicle from sliding further down the slope, it was temporarily secured to a nearby olive tree with specialized straps while crane vehicles were summoned to remove it. Traffic in the area was suspended during the operation. No injuries were reported.

The bus driver claimed he had repeatedly warned the Malevizi Municipality and its officials about the dangerous condition of the route. Conversely, the responsible deputy mayor stated that vegetation clearing had been performed ten days prior and suggested the driver should have reported the road conditions to the authorities sooner.
