Crete municipalities declare states of emergency after severe storms

Multiple municipalities across Crete have declared states of emergency following devastating storms and extreme weather between early October 2026. The natural disasters caused widespread damage to road networks, agricultural infrastructure, retaining walls, and residential properties through flooding, landslides, and erosion.

In Hersonissos, Mayor Zacharias Doxastakis has initiated procedures to declare the entire municipality a state of emergency to secure resources for rapid repairs. Similarly, the Municipality of Apokoronas has declared emergency status for several municipal units and communities, requesting €2.6 million in economic aid for restoration and flood protection works.

In Heraklion, the communities of Vassileia and Skalania have been added to the existing list of emergency zones. Affected residents may be eligible for financial assistance, including up to €6,000 per household for repairs or replacement of household goods, and specific subsidies for large families or individuals with disabilities.
