Heraklion students receive subsidized unlimited transit passes

Students in Heraklion, Greece, will benefit from a significant reduction in transportation costs through a collaborative initiative. A new monthly student pass providing unlimited travel on the city's urban transit network has been priced at 19 euros, down from the previous 45 euros. This represents a subsidy of nearly 60%.

The program is a joint effort between the University of Crete, the Municipality of Heraklion, the Region of Crete, and the Heraklion Urban KTEL. It is designed to support students from both the University of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University (ELMEPA) studying in Heraklion. The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on students and their families by facilitating daily movement throughout the city.

The municipality is coordinating the implementation and providing the largest portion of the financial contribution, while the Region of Crete covers approximately 35% of the total subsidy. The program anticipates the distribution of up to 12,500 monthly cards.
