Heraklion to host temporary migrant reception facility
The Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum has submitted an amendment to establish a temporary migrant reception facility in the Linardi area of Athanata, within the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete. The measure aims to accelerate administrative and technical procedures to address increased migration flows at the country’s southern maritime borders.
The proposal involves leasing or subleasing a property for one year, starting October 6, 2026, at a monthly cost of 13,500 euros. This results in an annual expenditure of 162,000 euros. While the initial lease is set for twelve months, the facility may continue to operate for a longer period if the Minister of Migration and Asylum determines that emergency conditions persist.
The facility is intended for the immediate reception, care, identification, and registration of third-country nationals. Officials noted that delays in establishing such structures could lead to the prolonged concentration of populations in unsuitable locations, potentially impacting local communities, public order, national security, and the fundamental rights of migrants.
