Herb Gardening Tips and Preservation Methods in the US
Extension horticulture agents Krista Quinn and Nicole Nichols of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture advise beginners on growing culinary herbs indoors or outdoors. They stress at least six hours of full sun, well‑draining soil, and avoiding soggy conditions. Easy herbs such as basil, parsley, oregano, thyme, rosemary and mint are recommended, with mint best started in a container to control its rapid spread. Starting with one or two varieties and expanding later is suggested.
Home cooks can preserve surplus herbs through drying, freezing, or making herb‑infused products. Michelle Bruhn demonstrates simple methods, including herb salts and a green‑herb dressing made with fresh herbs, yogurt, lemon juice and optional capers. The preservation techniques extend the harvest’s usability for up to five days in the refrigerator.
