Herb Oil Ice Cubes Extend Fresh Flavor for Home Cooks
Chopped fresh herbs such as basil, parsley, chives, oregano, thyme or rosemary are covered with olive oil, placed in silicone ice‑cube trays and frozen. The resulting herb‑oil cubes keep the herbs’ aroma and taste for months, far longer than drying or refrigeration.
When cooking, a cube can be dropped directly into a pan or pot without thawing, instantly flavoring pasta, risotto, sauces, soups, or sautéed meats, fish and mushrooms. The method, promoted by Czech chef David Šlapák, helps households use surplus garden or balcony herbs, reduces food waste and provides a ready‑to‑use flavored oil.
The technique has regained popularity in home kitchens, offering a simple, low‑cost way to preserve herb flavor and save time.
