Herbert Grönemeyer awarded North Rhine-Westphalia Art Prize

Musician and actor Herbert Grönemeyer has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Art Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The award, which includes a 25,000 euro prize, recognizes both his musical contributions and his social and political engagement.

Grönemeyer, 70, is one of Germany's most successful musicians, with over 22.3 million records sold. The jury and state officials highlighted his role in representing the cultural identity of the Ruhr region, specifically citing his classic album ‘4630 Bochum’.

In addition to his artistic achievements, the award honors his commitment to democracy, poverty reduction, social cohesion, and reforms in music streaming. Minister-President Hendrik Wüst and Culture Minister Ina Brandes will present the award on November 17 at the K21 art collection in Düsseldorf.
