Herbert Grönemeyer promotes community cohesion in Saxony-Anhalt

Singer Herbert Grönemeyer is engaging in social initiatives in Saxony-Anhalt to promote community cohesion. Ahead of the state elections, the 70-year-old artist will travel to Magdeburg to perform with local choirs.

Working with the association ‘Heimatbewegen’ and the ‘Gemeinsame Sache’ initiative, Grönemeyer aims to bring people together rather than focusing on daily politics. He views social reunification as the essential foundation for democratic coexistence.

In discussions with the German Press Agency, Grönemeyer reflected on the legacy of German reunification. He suggested that 36 years later, society has yet to fully address its collective identity. He noted that people from the former GDR were ‘overrun’ during the transition, experiencing a loss of security and structure as they were moved into a new system without adequate support.
