Herbert Kickl announces motion of no confidence against Austrian government

Herbert Kickl, leader of the FPÖ, has announced a motion of no confidence against the Austrian federal government, comprising the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS. The motion is expected to be introduced during the upcoming National Council session on October 14 and 15.

Kickl characterized the current coalition as a “failed experiment” that has caused political deadlock. He cited ongoing internal disputes, the inability to implement reforms—noting reports of nearly 100 stalled reform projects—and a failure to address inflation and corporate insolvencies as primary reasons for the move. Kickl specifically criticized Chancellor Christian Stocker, accusing the ÖVP of clinging to power to avoid political irrelevance.

In response, Chancellor Stocker expressed his intention to maintain the coalition, stating that the government remains legitimate as long as it is capable of functioning. The current political tension is exacerbated by leadership changes within the SPÖ and broader disagreements regarding the coalition's ability to govern effectively.
