Herbert Mensah applauds record African representation at World Cup 2026

Herbert Mensah, president of Rugby Africa, highlighted that ten African nations have qualified for the expanded FIFA World Cup 2026 – a historic record for the continent. He said the strong performances of teams such as Morocco, South Africa, Senegal, Cape Verde, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo demonstrate that "the quality is here" and that African football can compete with traditional powers.

Mensah urged fans to support all African sides, noting that success on the global stage can strengthen continental unity and showcase the continent’s growing talent, athleticism and tactical maturity. He also reiterated calls for greater World Cup representation for Africa, arguing that more slots would bring higher‑quality football and greater entertainment for the sport worldwide.
