Herbert Reul defends Friedrich Merz over forest fire visit
North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul has defended Chancellor Friedrich Merz against criticism regarding the timing of his visit to the Hürtgenwald forest fire site. During the WDR talk show ‘Kölner Treff’, Reul dismissed the debate over the order of official visits as ‘total nonsense’.
Merz had faced scrutiny for visiting the area only after his vacation and after firefighting efforts had concluded. Merz stated that he had offered to come during the fire and had spoken with District Administrator Ralf Nolten multiple times, but Nolten requested that he visit at a later time.
Reul, who canceled his own summer vacation to address the crisis, praised the work of volunteer emergency services and noted that his own presence during the active firefighting phase was intended to show support rather than provide direct assistance.
