Herbicide drift causes R$ 210 million loss to Rio Grande do Sul viticulture

A new study conducted by Consevitis-RS and researchers from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and IFRS Campus Bento Gonçalves reveals that herbicide drift has caused an estimated R$ 210 million in losses to the viticulture industry in Rio Grande do Sul between 2018 and 2025.

The research, which analyzed over 400 recorded occurrences, accounts for production losses, increased management costs, and the necessity of vineyard renewal. While registered cases account for R$ 161.6 million of these impacts, the total estimated damage reaches R$ 210 million. The study indicates that approximately 700 hectares of vineyards have been directly affected.

Projections suggest that if the current situation remains unchanged, the industry could face an additional R$ 150.1 million in losses over the next five years.
