Herdade da Galeana preserves Murteira Grave fighting bull lineage

Located in the Granja parish of Mourão, Herdade da Galeana serves as the home of the Murteira Grave cattle ranch. Situated on the left bank of the Guadiana River in the Alentejo region, the estate is dedicated to the breeding and selection of fighting bulls (toiro bravo).

The Murteira Grave lineage began in 1944 when Manuel Joaquim Grave established the ranch with 25 cows and a stallion named Fabeto. The ranch made its official debut in Évora in 1950 and later presented its livestock at the Monumental bullring in Madrid in 1964.

Today, the legacy is continued by Joaquim Grave, a veterinarian with a doctorate in Animal Production, who combines scientific knowledge with traditional field experience to manage breeding and selection processes. The estate also offers public visits including guided tours and regional gastronomy to showcase the daily reality of bull breeding and its connection to the local territory.
