Heritage Foods cited by Indian regulator for misleading ‘Fresh Paneer’ and ‘Healthy’ claims

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a formal notice to Heritage Foods Ltd, a dairy company founded by Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, over alleged misleading labeling of its “Fresh Paneer” product and the use of the term “Healthy” in the “Healthy Happiness” brand. The regulator says the word “Fresh” does not satisfy conditions under Schedule V of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the claim “Healthy” violates Regulation 8(3) of the Advertising and Claims Rules, potentially creating a false impression of health benefits. Heritage Foods has been asked to submit a written response within seven days explaining why no action should be taken. The notice was issued on suo moto grounds and following consumer complaints, reflecting FSSAI’s recent crackdown on food‑labeling and advertising practices. Heritage Foods operates in 16 Indian states, holds a market capitalisation of roughly Rs 3,100 crore, and reported a 37 % profit decline in the latest quarter.
