Heritage preservation faces climate and labor challenges

The upcoming Open Monument Day focuses on the theme ‘Resilient Heritage – In Times of Uncertainty,’ addressing the challenges facing historical preservation. Key threats to monuments include climate change, extreme weather, moisture, drought, and temperature fluctuations, alongside the complexities of integrating energy transitions without compromising historical value.

Beyond environmental factors, the sector faces a shortage of specialized craftsmen, such as masons, carpenters, and painters, whose traditional skills are difficult to transfer. The preservation of heritage is increasingly viewed as a societal responsibility involving both technical expertise and community volunteers.

In Nijmegen, the Thiemeloods—a former paper warehouse built in 1908 that was named Monument of the Year in 2025—will open its doors to the public. Now managed by the cooperative ‘De Vriend van Thieme,’ the site serves as a cultural hub for music and theater. Events at the location include historical tours and a photography exhibition by Evert den Hartogh titled ‘Rondje Bottendaal.’
