Heritage preservation in Stalowa Wola and Rozwadów faces social challenges
Recent discussions regarding urban revitalization in Stalowa Wola and Rozwadów highlight a growing paradox in cultural heritage protection. While cities are allocating record amounts of funding toward the conservation of monuments and the revitalization of historical districts, architectural success does not always translate into social success.
Experts suggest that while conservation preserves the physical substance of a monument, it cannot independently restore its cultural, economic, or symbolic functions. When historical spaces are restored only for aesthetic purposes or tourism without integrating into the daily lives of residents, they risk becoming mere decorative objects rather than living parts of the community.
This shift reflects an evolution in international heritage theory, moving away from viewing monuments as autonomous objects and toward seeing them as part of a broader cultural landscape shaped by collective memory and social practices. The central concern is that a city failing to give its history contemporary meaning may lose its ability to build a functional future.
