Altenmarkt resident arrested for arson following domestic dispute

A 40-year-old Latvian citizen was arrested in Altenmarkt, Lower Austria, after allegedly setting fire to his husband's residence using a lighter. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 29, 2026.

Emergency services responded to reports of a roof in full blaze. While the house was completely destroyed, authorities confirmed that no individuals were inside the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The estimated damages are in the low six-figure Euro range.

The suspect, who was reportedly heavily intoxicated, was apprehended by police between Altenmarkt and Ungersdorf. He admitted to igniting flammable objects, citing a dispute with his husband as the motive. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Korneuburg has ordered his detention in the Korneuburg judicial prison.
