Hermannplatz U8 entrance expected to reopen in December 2026
The second entrance to the U8 subway line at Hermannplatz in Berlin is expected to reopen in December 2026. The entrance has been closed for six years due to the renovation of its stairs and entrance portal.
Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) spokesperson Nils Kremmin attributed the long delays to several factors, including the complexity of working on century-old structures and the necessity of performing work at night to avoid disrupting daytime service. Additionally, the station is a protected monument, requiring renovations to strictly adhere to historical aesthetics. This includes difficulties in sourcing granite that matches the original color and effect.
The closure has contributed to overcrowding at the station, which serves the U7 and U8 lines across two levels and includes underground connections to a local department store.
