Hermes Birkin bag resale values decline amid increased supply
The resale market for the Hermes Birkin bag is facing downward pressure as the scarcity that once drove massive premiums begins to diminish. Resellers report that the resale value for unworn Birkin bags has dropped by more than $6,000 from its 2022 peak, reflecting a broader shift in the luxury market.
Industry analysts and resellers attribute this decline to an increasing supply of bags in the second-hand market and a potential softening of demand. While Hermes has historically maintained exclusivity by linking bag access to high spending on other brand items, the rise of online resale platforms like Vestiaire Collective and The RealReal has made these luxury goods more accessible than in previous years.
Despite the drop in resale premiums, Hermes remains a highly profitable entity, with annual sales tripling to €16 billion between 2015 and 2025. However, the shrinking gap between retail prices and second-hand market values is raising questions about the long-term impact on the brand's investment appeal and its core scarcity-driven business model.
