Hermosillo flags eight streets with aging asbestos pipes at sinkhole risk

The Hermosillo municipal government has identified eight road sections where underground asbestos‑cored pipes have exceeded their service life, creating a risk of sinkholes, especially during heavy rain. Mayor Antonio Astiazarán Gutiérrez said the network is over 30 years old and that recent heavy rains have already caused four collapses that are under technical review. The affected stretches include Boulevard Luis Encinas (between García Morales and Quintero Arce), Boulevard Luis Donaldo Colosio (between Sahuaripa and Real del Arco), Boulevard Carlos Quintero Arce (from Paseo Río Sonora to García Morales), Avenida Olivares (between Colosio and José S. Healy), Leandro P. Gaxiola (between Quintana Roo and Enrique Quijada) and Juan de Dios Bojórquez (between Ignacio Salazar and García Morales). The city is working on repairs, seeking federal or state funding, and will continue to warn motorists about the hazards.
