Hermosillo plants over 113,000 trees and expands tire‑recycling drive to improve air quality

The Hermosillo municipal government reported that more than 113,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted or donated across the city’s north‑west neighborhoods since 2021. The plan aims to reach 98,607 m² of green cover within five years, including 3,250 trees at the north sports complex and additional plantings in areas such as Puerta Real, Solidaridad, La Cholla, Pueblitos and Villa Verde. Using the i‑Tree Canopy tool, officials measured that 32.18 % of the city’s vegetation meets international standards.

Air‑quality monitoring shows daily PM10 and PM2.5 levels remain below legal limits, supported by new sensors installed in Bahía de Kino and the Altares colonia. To protect the new vegetation, five electric water‑truck units will be added for irrigation.

Parallel environmental actions include the “Llantatón por Nuestra Salud” tire‑collection campaign, which has gathered more than 6,600 used tires across several neighborhoods, preventing roughly 15 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and reducing mosquito‑breeding sites. A recent effort in the Villa del Prado colonia removed 567 tires, further supporting the city’s clean‑air and public‑health goals.
