Hermosillo wins WWF Cities Challenge for climate action

Hermosillo has won the WWF Cities Challenge in Mexico for the second time, earning recognition as an international leader in climate action for the 2025-2026 cycle. The city is one of only two Latin American winners, alongside Medellín.

Mayor Antonio Astiazarán Gutiérrez accepted the award virtually via video message during the Climate Week in Medellín, Colombia, after canceling his trip to manage the local emergency caused by Hurricane Polo. He stated that the recognition reinforces the necessity of preparing cities for extreme and unpredictable weather phenomena through sustainable decisions such as solar panels, electric vehicles, and reforestation.

María José Villanueva, Director General of WWF Mexico, congratulated the municipal government, noting that the distinction reflects the city's continuous commitment to a development model aligned with global sustainability goals. The formal award ceremony is scheduled to take place in October 2026 during Climate Week in Mexico City.
