Hermosillo wins WWF One Planet City Challenge for climate leadership
Hermosillo has been named the national winner of the WWF One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) for the 2025-2026 period. This international initiative evaluates local progress toward climate change goals and the Paris Agreement. The city's recognition is based on its strategic vision, implementation capacity, and long-term climate agenda, which includes the Municipal Climate Action Program (PACMUN) and the 'Hermosillo, Solar City' energy transition strategy.
Mayor Antonio Astiazarán Gutiérrez highlighted the city's commitment to renewable energy and sustainable public services. During a solar energy forum in Ciudad Obregón, he detailed various clean energy projects, such as the deployment of over 350 electric patrol cars and the installation of solar panels at police stations. These initiatives aim to improve public service efficiency and reduce environmental impact through electric mobility and improved public lighting.
