Hermès Birkin bags face declining resale value
The legendary status of the Hermès Birkin bag as a high-yield investment tool is facing challenges as resale prices decline. For years, the bag's desirability was driven by extreme scarcity, with secondary market prices often doubling the original retail cost. However, resellers report that the value of unused Birkin bags has dropped by more than $6,000 compared to the market peak in 2022.
Resellers note that increased availability through online platforms, specialized boutiques, and social media has facilitated a higher volume of bags in the secondary market. Access to new Birkin or Kelly models at retail remains difficult, with some estimates suggesting customers must spend between $10,000 and $20,000 on other Hermès products, such as silk scarves, clothing, and shoes, before being offered these iconic items.
While the secondary market fluctuates, Hermès continues to report strong financial performance. The company's annual sales tripled between 2015 and 2025, reaching €16 billion, with an operating profit margin of 41% in 2025, outperforming competitors like Chanel and LVMH's leather goods division.
