Hermès faces scrutiny after Savannah James' Milan shopping incident

Savannah James and April McDaniel recently shared an experience on the “Question Everything” podcast regarding their attempt to shop at a Hermès store in Milan. Despite having scheduled appointments, the pair reported being turned away by staff. Following a confrontation, they noted that the saleswoman involved was reportedly fired. Upon returning to the store later, they were granted access to a private room with luxury amenities and a full selection of products.

The incident has reignited discussions concerning the treatment of Black women within luxury retail spaces. This conversation intersects with broader economic trends, including the rise of affordable alternatives and ‘dupes’—such as Walmart’s Birkin-inspired bags—as consumers increasingly seek value outside of traditional high-end legacy brands.
