Heroku adds static website support via new Cloud Native Buildpack
Heroku has expanded its platform capabilities by introducing support for static websites through the new Front-End Web Cloud Native Buildpack (CNB). This addition allows for the deployment of client-side browser applications composed of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
The new buildpack provides a complete deployment solution, including default web hosting for index.html files, high-performance static web serving, and JavaScript builds powered by Heroku’s Node.js Cloud Native Buildpack. It is designed to integrate with existing developer workflows, supporting deployment from Git and GitHub, twelve-factor app configuration, and collaborative tools like Heroku Pipelines and Review Apps.
As a Cloud Native Buildpack, this feature offers an open, standardized system that builds and runs OCI-compliant container images. This approach aims to replace traditional Dockerfiles with a more composable architecture that supports higher supply chain trust through Software Bill of Materials (SBOMs) and automated OS security patching via CNB rebase.
