HERON to launch 150 MW battery in Boeotia this November
HERON is scheduled to begin operations of its 150 MW power battery in Boeotia, Greece, this November. This investment aims to enhance the flexibility of the national electricity system, particularly as the penetration of renewable energy sources increases.
The project is a fully merchant investment, meaning its revenues will depend entirely on fluctuations in the wholesale electricity markets. The battery will be located at the site of the former HERON I natural gas unit, which was relocated to Crete to support the island's power needs during the completion of its major electrical interconnection.
This development was made possible by state regulations allowing the conversion of thermal power plant licenses into autonomous energy storage licenses. The Ministry of Environment and Energy notes that this measure facilitates the development of a battery portfolio with a total capacity of up to 1,094 MW.
