Herpes zoster affects one in ten people over 50

Experts from the Fnomceo platform ‘Dottore ma è vero che…?’ have provided information regarding herpes zoster, commonly known as ‘fuoco di Sant’Antonio’. The infection, which is part of the varicella group, is present in approximately 95% of the population. It is estimated that one in ten people over the age of 50 will experience at least one episode of the disease in their lifetime.

Symptoms typically include intense skin inflammation, a burning sensation, and vesicles distributed on one side of the chest or abdomen. While symptoms usually last between two and four weeks, some patients may suffer from postherpetic neuralgia, characterized by persistent pain, sensitivity, and fatigue that can last for months.

Medical experts emphasize that vaccines are effective, safe, and available to help control symptoms and prevent complications, particularly for the elderly population who are most at risk of debilitating effects.
