Herpes Zoster prevention emphasized by Italian medical experts

Medical experts are highlighting the year-round risk of Herpes Zoster, a condition that affects over 200,000 people annually in Italy. Tecla Mastronuzzi of the Italian Society of General Medicine and Primary Care (Simg) noted that while some studies show increased cases during warmer months, the virus lacks a strict seasonal pattern.

The virus remains latent in the body following a chickenpox infection and can reactivate when the immune system is weakened, particularly due to aging or immunosuppressive conditions. While not highly contagious, the virus can be transmitted through direct contact with lesion fluid.

Prevention through a two-dose vaccine is highly effective. Vaccination is recommended for all patients aged 65 and older, as well as individuals aged 18 and older who have specific risk factors such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic bronchitis, asthma, or those undergoing immunosuppressive therapies for oncological or other conditions.
