Herrenknecht to provide tunneling technology for Vingroup's $4B rail project

VinSpeed, a subsidiary of Vingroup, has partnered with German technology firm Herrenknecht to implement advanced tunneling solutions for a $4 billion high-speed rail project in Vietnam. The project aims to connect central Ho Chi Minh City with the Can Gio sea reclamation urban area.

To navigate the complex geological conditions and dense urban infrastructure between Ben Thanh Station and the Muoi Port area, Herrenknecht will deploy a specialized 13.6-meter diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). This massive robot is designed specifically for the local hydrogeological conditions and operates through a closed-loop process: it excavates soil, transports debris via conveyor belts, assembles precast concrete tunnel segments, and injects grout to stabilize the tunnel walls simultaneously.

This partnership complements the involvement of Siemens Mobility, which is providing train technology, ensuring the project utilizes world-class engineering to manage underground construction while minimizing surface subsidence to protect existing high-rise buildings.
