Hertfordshire rail line to close for nine days for flood repairs

A busy railway branch line in Hertfordshire will close for nine days to undergo extensive repairs following damage caused by severe flooding in December. The flooding was triggered by a burst Thames Water sewer pipe at Rye House station, which caused water to gush over the platforms and tracks.

From Saturday, 17 October, to Sunday, 25 October, there will be no train services between Hertford East and Rye House. Engineers plan to replace approximately 1 km of track, including rails, sleepers, and ballast, to ensure the route is “fit for the future.” The project also includes repairing and resurfacing the platform structure and completing upgrades to platform one at St Margaret’s station.

Replacement buses will be provided, and tickets will be valid on alternative services. Passengers are advised to check travel details with Greater Anglia, Stansted Express, or Transport for London before traveling. Martin Beable, chief operating officer for Great British Railways – Anglia, noted that while the extended closure is disruptive, the work is necessary to maintain service quality.
