Hervé Renard leads Côte d'Ivoire through friendly loss and CAN qualifier victory

Côte d'Ivoire's national football team, led by coach Hervé Renard, has experienced mixed results in recent outings. During a friendly match at the Ébimpé Olympic Stadium, the Elephants suffered a 0-1 defeat against Cameroon. The loss, marked by a 46th-minute goal from Bil Nsongo, sparked debate due to Renard's decision to rotate ten of the eleven players from the previous match, leading some supporters to criticize the use of a secondary lineup.

In competitive play, however, Côte d'Ivoire secured a 2-0 victory against Ghana in their opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) qualifiers in Bouaké. Goals from Malick Yalcouyé and a Franck Kessié penalty secured the win. The match was marked by controversy when Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz criticized a penalty decision as a “total joke.” Renard declined to engage with the criticism, focusing instead on the importance of the three points despite playing on difficult pitch conditions.
