Herzegovina coffee culture: The social significance of paying the bill

In Herzegovina, the ritualistic struggle over who pays the bill in cafes is viewed as a profound cultural code rather than a mere financial transaction. Communication expert Professor Božo Skoko explains that while Western cultures treat paying as an individualistic transaction, the Mediterranean and Balkan approach uses the gesture to signal hospitality, status, and social closeness.

Skoko notes that insisting on paying is a way to demonstrate that a person is valued, whereas insisting on splitting the bill can be perceived as a lack of intimacy or respect. This behavior is deeply rooted in a regional mentality where reputation and being perceived as “generous” are vital forms of social capital.

Furthermore, Skoko suggests that this unique lifestyle—characterized by long, spontaneous coffee sessions used for both relaxation and business—possesses untapped potential for branding, similar to the Danish concept of “hygge.”
