Herzegovina fig producers discuss cultivation and climate challenges

The Federal Agromediterranean Institute Mostar organized a workshop focused on the development and challenges of fig cultivation in Herzegovina. Experts and producers discussed the impact of drought and climate change on production.

Miro Barbarić, Head of the Fruit Department at the Institute, noted that fig trees typically reach significant fruiting stages in their third or fourth year. He emphasized that for production to be financially viable, plantations should ideally exceed three decares. The workshop aimed to encourage young agronomists to engage with this Mediterranean crop, highlighting opportunities for value-added processing such as jams.

Fig production is widespread across Herzegovina, with significant producers present in nearly every municipality.
