Herzegovina priest calls for end to traditional funeral customs

A priest from the Hutovo parish in southern Herzegovina has publicly called for the abolition of certain traditional funeral customs, labeling them as non-Christian and unnecessary expenses.

He specifically criticized the hiring of trumpet players, describing it as “folklore without faith” that costs approximately 300 KM. Instead, he suggests that these funds should be redirected toward the renovation of churches, cemeteries, and religious spaces.

Additionally, the priest criticized the practice of bringing large quantities of funeral wreaths, calling them a symbol of “unnecessary honor to this passing world” and a display of human ego. He noted that wreaths are expensive, difficult to manage, and ultimately create waste. He proposes a simpler farewell involving prayer, song, and a single floral arrangement, such as an ikebana or a single carnation, to honor the deceased.
