HES-SO Genève referendum committee launches campaign against budget cuts

A referendum committee has launched a campaign to oppose a proposed annual budget cut of 2 million Swiss francs for HES-SO Genève. The decision, made by a majority in the Grand Conseil, will be put to a public vote in Geneva on September 27.

The committee, composed of an alliance of parties, unions, and associations, argues that the reduction threatens the quality of education and penalizes students. HES-SO Genève provides training for over 6,000 students across six specialized fields, including health, social work, engineering, architecture, management, art, design, and music.

Critics note that these cuts follow significant increases in tuition fees: a 40% increase for Swiss residents and up to 110% for international students. Opponents warn that the budget reduction could lead to increased pressure on study conditions, reduced support services, and weakened essential services, particularly in fields where internships are vital. The committee maintains that public education should not be used as a budgetary adjustment variable.
