Hesse government and church leaders meet to promote social cohesion

The Hessian state government and leaders of the Protestant and Catholic churches in Hesse met in Wiesbaden to discuss strengthening social cohesion amidst growing societal tensions. During the traditional high-level meeting, participants emphasized the importance of defending democratic values and creating spaces for mutual understanding.

Hessian Prime Minister Boris Rhein praised the churches as “reliable constants” that provide orientation during challenging times. He noted their historical role in supporting a free democracy and an inclusive society, calling for “cohesion instead of division.”

Dr. Beate Hofmann, Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck, represented the Protestant churches, stating that religious institutions must work to counter polarization. She also asserted that the church cannot remain silent when people are marginalized or when the foundations of democratic coexistence are attacked by far-right positions.
