Hesse Interior Minister addresses municipal autonomy

At the general assembly of the Hessian Association of Cities and Municipalities in Weilburg, Hesse Interior Minister Roman Poseck addressed the importance of municipal self-governance. The event coincided with the 80th anniversary of both the association and the state of Hesse.

Poseck highlighted the current financial pressures facing municipalities and emphasized the need to strengthen local autonomy. He noted that while self-governance is a constitutional mandate under Article 137 of the Hessian Constitution, local authorities are increasingly being treated as mere executors of state tasks rather than active designers of local policy. The Minister also discussed the implementation of the future pact between the state and municipal associations.
