Hessen and Uri approve wolf culling measures to protect livestock

Hessian Environment Minister Ingmar Jung announced that the state will introduce a wolf management plan allowing the removal of up to 40 % of juvenile wolves each year from 1 July to 31 October. The aim is to keep the overall wolf population at a moderate level while ensuring that livestock farming remains viable. Under the plan, problem wolves that have caused damage can be legally killed, and the state is preparing the required legal adjustments at the federal level.

In the Swiss canton of Uri, authorities issued a 60‑day shooting permit for a wolf that killed six sheep on the Vorder Bristen alpine pasture. The cantonal security directorate declared the damage threshold met under federal law and installed an electric fence as an emergency measure. The permit authorises designated hunters, under the direction of the cantonal hunting department, to eliminate the offending animal within the defined perimeter.
