Hessen launches 10 million euro heat protection program
The state government of Hessen has launched the 'Hitzehilfe Hessen' program to improve heat protection for vulnerable populations. The initiative provides approximately ten million euros to support the purchase of air conditioning technology in daycare centers and nursing care facilities.
Environment Minister Ingmar Jung announced the program in the state parliament, noting that increasing heatwaves require pragmatic and rapid responses. The funding is intended to assist institutions in acquiring mobile and semi-stationary cooling systems, which can be installed without major structural changes.
Health Minister Diana Stolz and Social Minister Heike Hofmann emphasized the necessity of the measure, highlighting that elderly residents, people with pre-existing conditions, and young children are at higher risk during extreme heat and tropical nights. The program is expected to distribute funds over the next three years, with grants of up to 5,000 euros available per location.
