Weißer Ring criticizes long delays in victim compensation

The victim assistance organization Weißer Ring is criticizing the lengthy processing times for crime victim compensation in Germany. Marking its 50th anniversary, the organization reported that legal procedures can often extend up to five years due to the time required for expert assessments.

Patrick Liesching, Vice Federal Chairman of the organization, noted that many victims withdraw their applications out of exhaustion or a feeling of being mistrusted by the state. He emphasized that for many, the process is less about the money and more about receiving official recognition of their suffering. The organization also highlighted significant regional disparities in approval rates, with some states seeing rejection rates as high as 70 percent.

Additionally, the organization reported a rise in digital violence, including 'love scamming' and unauthorized filming via smart glasses, alongside its most frequent cases involving domestic violence. Weißer Ring operates with approximately 3,000 volunteers nationwide and has distributed 170 million euros in aid since its founding in 1976.
