Hessischer Rundfunk faces allegations over Nazi-era property dispute

Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) is facing allegations regarding the potential unlawful benefit from property expropriated from the Jewish B’nai B’rith Lodge during the Nazi era. Documents suggest that in the 1950s, the broadcaster may have paid significantly lower compensation for land in a prime Frankfurt location than its actual value, despite an existing expert opinion at the time indicating a higher valuation.

In response to the controversy, hr has commissioned a legal assessment of a 1951 document, known as the Hübner report, which it claims only became known following media investigations. The broadcaster has proposed using a neutral mediator to resolve the dispute and has initiated an independent scientific study to investigate its founding period and property ownership history.

The situation has led to political friction. Daniel Neumann, chairman of the State Association of Jewish Communities in Hesse, resigned from his position on the supervisory board of an hr subsidiary following what was described as a hesitant response to the allegations. Additionally, the Liberal-Islamic League (LIB) has criticized the broadcaster's handling of the matter, calling its delayed reaction a “moral failure.”
