Hezbollah leadership targeted following Hashem Safieddine assassination
On the anniversary of the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hashem Safieddine on October 3, 2024, questions have emerged regarding the security of Hezbollah leadership and the potential targeting of Naim Qassem.
Safieddine was considered a key successor to Hassan Nasrallah, possessing significant military, security, and political expertise. Despite implementing security measures similar to those used by Nasrallah, Safieddine was targeted by Israel. Unlike Nasrallah, Safieddine had appeared publicly at various events, including military maneuvers in May 2023 and the funeral of military commander Fuad Shukr in August 2024.
The current leadership transition raises concerns about whether Naim Qassem, now serving as Secretary-General, is also a primary target for Israeli operations and whether the group's protective measures are sufficient to prevent further high-level assassinations.
