Hezbollah operations in Syria aim to destabilize new leadership

Syrian security forces recently apprehended a cell allegedly linked to Hezbollah that was preparing to plant explosives at the Homs refinery. This follows previous accusations of Hezbollah cells preparing to launch missiles into Syria from the Lebanese border with Iranian support, as well as the interception of various arms and ammunition shipments intended for the group in Lebanon.

Analysts suggest these operations serve several strategic goals. First, they aim to destabilize the security and stability of the new Syrian administration led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, which emerged after the removal of the previous regime. Second, the activities appear intended to disrupt efforts to normalize relations between the Lebanese state and the Syrian authorities, which could lead to better border security.

Finally, these actions may seek to create friction between Lebanon and Syria, potentially provoking the Syrian government to intervene in border regions where Hezbollah maintains presence. Such instability could provide a pretext for the group to maintain its armed status and continue concealing former Syrian regime officials within its areas of influence.
