Hezbollah threatens retaliation after lethal Israeli strikes in Lebanon
Hezbollah has threatened retaliation following lethal Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon. The group issued a statement warning that the Israeli military must understand its attempts to impose a fait accompli will not continue and will be met with an appropriate response in defense of Lebanon. Additionally, Hezbollah urged the Lebanese government in Beirut to cease what it termed 'humiliating' negotiations with Israel.
The Israeli military reported that the strikes targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and were a response to violations of the existing ceasefire. The attacks, which included strikes on residential areas near the village of Ansar, resulted in the deaths of nine people, including women and children. This represents the deadliest outcome since the ceasefire agreements reached in June.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strikes, noting that an entire family was killed in Ansar. He stated the attacks send a 'clear message' regarding the future of diplomatic talks, which are scheduled to resume in Rome this September. Lebanese Prime Minister Naif Salam also condemned the civilian casualties and warned of a potential escalation in the crisis.
