Hezbollah undergoes major shifts following Nasrallah's death and Gaza war

Hezbollah has undergone significant structural and strategic shifts following the decision by former Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah to engage in a war supporting Hamas in Gaza starting in October 2023. This decision, often viewed as a commitment to the ‘unity of fronts’ directed by Tehran, has resulted in substantial losses for the group.

The organization has faced severe military and intelligence setbacks, including the assassination of Nasrallah in September 2024 and the subsequent loss of several key military and security leaders. The collapse of the Assad regime in Syria has further disrupted a primary supply route for the group.

While the assassination of Nasrallah represented a major blow to the group’s centralized leadership style—where power was heavily concentrated in his office—analysts suggest the organization may continue to function through its existing institutional networks. Following Nasrallah's death, Naim Qassem was elected as the new Secretary-General in late October 2024.
