Hezbollah undergoes military repositioning amid US sanction proposals
Hezbollah is undergoing significant military and strategic shifts in Lebanon following recent Israeli operations and regional political changes. According to a report from the Hudson Institute, the United States is considering non-military options to weaken the group, including expanding sanctions and publicly naming known members. The report suggests Hezbollah is currently weaker than in previous decades, having suffered leadership strikes since October 2023 and lost strategic depth in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime.
On the ground in southern Lebanon, Hezbollah is reportedly repositioning its assets. Military sources indicate the group is moving precision missiles, defensive systems, and ammunition to villages west of the Yellow Line, specifically in the Iqlim al-Tuffah, Jabal al-Rayhan, and Jabal Safi regions. This movement aims to establish fortified rear positions and move equipment away from areas vulnerable to Israeli targeting.
The group faces increasing operational difficulties due to the loss of strategic tunnels and high ground, such as the area around Tell Ali al-Tahir, which previously allowed for covert movement and storage. While the Lebanese government is pursuing a gradual approach to disarm the group via the national army, experts express doubt regarding the military's capacity to fully remove Hezbollah from its strongholds without a direct military confrontation.
