Höfði summit hosts leaders to discuss AI and peace

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic 1986 summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir hosted a meeting of international leaders at Höfði in Reykjavík.

Participants, including Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, former Irish President Mary Robinson, and UN officials Volker Türk and Izumi Nakamitsu, discussed peace, disarmament, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence. The dialogue focused on the potential dangers of AI and the necessity of ensuring the technology is developed responsibly. Leaders also addressed the declining respect for international law and global institutions, calling for increased trust between nations.

The gathering concluded with three current and former national leaders signing a joint appeal for responsible leadership. The event served as a reflection on the 1986 meeting, which played a pivotal role in Cold War de-escalation and the eventual signing of the INF Treaty.
