Mexico security officials address police attacks and journalist restaurant shooting

Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, addressed the risks faced by law enforcement during the graduation of 121 new members of the Federal Protection Service (SPF). Harfuch highlighted recent violence, including a May 17 attack that resulted in a fatality and a recent operation in the State of Mexico where agents were fired upon while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for Edgar Aarón “N”, an alleged leader of the Nuevo Imperio Cartel.

In Oaxaca, authorities are investigating an armed attack on the Rockaway restaurant in Juchitán de Zaragoza. The establishment belongs to journalist Ignacio Santiago Martínez, director of Pluma Digital. Santiago Martínez reported that two men on a motorcycle opened fire on the business, which he attributes to both his journalistic work and his refusal to pay a 50,000 peso monthly extortion demand. The Oaxaca State Prosecutor’s Office and specialized units for crimes against freedom of expression are conducting investigations, with security forces securing the scene.
